Nigerian Political Science Association, NPSA, South-South Zone has blamed the nation‘s leaders for misappropriating funds that could have been used for infrastructural and human capital development.

The association apportioned the blame at the end of the association‘s 6th Annual Conference, which rounded off yesterday in Calabar.

The association‘s chairman, Dr Sunday Ibanga, blamed Nigeria’s development crisis on self-seeking leaders, stressing that Nigeria suffers from a governance deficit and lack of purposeful leadership because the country‘s leaders are self-seeking.

A communiqué signed by the association chairman, Dr Sunday Ibanga, and Secretary, Dr Benson Udom, called for the movement from the theoretical realm to the practical tool of system transformation.

Speaking on the theme ‘Interrogating Politics, Governance and the Crisis of Development’, the chairman stated that all the socio-economic and political crises faced by the nation are caused by the misappropriation of the nation‘s scarce resources.

The communiqué lamented how resources for development are often misappropriated, leading to development crises that affect socio-economic and political development and have attendant consequences for national and human security.

The association advocates for Political Scientists‘ involvement in politics so that they can have a place in governance and implement their thoughts on moving the country forward.

The conference identified political parties and party politics as responsible for democracy problems, blaming Nigeria’s federalism for failing to achieve glory.

The communiqué lamented that there is no institutional framework for our community policing architecture and advocated that the National Assembly must create an enabling institutional framework for the formal operation of community policing in Nigeria.

The communique emphasised the need to make political offices less financially attractive by reviewing relevant extant laws and strengthening existing structures that could enable the nation‘s leadership to be accountable.
