Emmanuella Ahenjir, the 23-year-old final-year student of Federal University Wukari who was allegedly shot dead by a police officer during a stop-and-search operation in Makurdi, has been laid to rest in her hometown in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Recall that Ahenjir was killed on May 16, 2025, near the Wurukum roundabout in Makurdi after police officers reportedly opened fire on a vehicle she was travelling in.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the officers shot at the car after the driver failed to immediately comply with their stop signal.

A bullet struck Emmanuella, who later died from her injuries at a nearby hospital.

Her death sparked outrage across the state and beyond, prompting peaceful protests in Makurdi.

Civil society groups and concerned residents marched through the streets, demanding justice for the slain student and calling for an end to police brutality.

Placards bearing messages such as “Justice for Emmanuella” and “End Police Brutality Now” were seen during the protests, as demonstrators urged authorities to hold the officers involved accountable.

The Benue State Police Command has since launched an investigation into the incident, promising that those responsible will face the full weight of the law if found culpable.
