A tragic incident occurred in Nasarafu Ward, Bida Local Government Area of Niger State, where a seven-year-old boy, Mohammed Mohammed, lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters triggered by heavy rainfall.

According to SaharaReporters, it was gathered that the incident occurred on Thursday, June 26, 2025, after a torrential downpour that lasted from 8:00 am to 11:00 am triggered a flash flood that overran homes and business premises in the area.

Mohammed was reportedly sent on an errand shortly after the rain stopped, but was caught by the raging flood and drowned.

His father, Mohammed Usman, who spoke to SaharaReporters amid tears, said the boy’s body had not yet been recovered.

“My pain is that, up to this moment I am speaking with you, the corpse of the boy could not be found,” he said, adding that immediately the rain stopped, “the entire community embarked on the search and rescue mission, but yet, we could not find the corpse.”

Residents of the area blamed Arab Contractor, the firm handling the construction of the bypass road, for diverting the natural drainage channel into the residential community.

They said the diversion has worsened flooding in the area, leading to frequent destruction of buildings and shops whenever it rains.

Thursday’s tragedy comes less than two weeks after a rainstorm on Saturday, June 14, 2025, ravaged the same community, destroying houses, a bridge, a culvert, and several business premises.

The Niger State Government had earlier awarded a contract for the rehabilitation of the one-kilometre Man Musa Kodogi/Nasarafu Road in Bida. Residents have now renewed calls on the government to urgently mobilise the contractor to the site to prevent future disasters.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Hussaini Ibrahim, confirmed the incident.

“We are conducting an assessment of the incident. After the findings, the state government will respond accordingly,” he said.
