The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to subsidize cancer medications and treatment services to help reduce the financial burden on patients.

The lawmakers also advocated free nationwide cancer screenings and called for the establishment of more treatment centres and the provision of additional radiotherapy machines across the country.

The resolution was passed during Wednesday’s plenary session after a motion was moved by Aderemi Oseni, a representative from Oyo State.

This appeal comes in the wake of recent data shared by World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, who noted in February that at least 40 people are diagnosed with cancer every minute worldwide.

The motion was moved by the member representing Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Aderemi Oseni.

Oseni emphasised that it is the government’s duty to safeguard the welfare and well-being of its citizens.

He noted that cancer poses a major public health challenge in Nigeria, with many patients unable to access treatment due to its prohibitive cost.
