The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has launched an investigation into the de@th of Nigerian national Michael Kenechukwu Ekemezie, who reportedly died following a violent encounter with Swiss police officers in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The 39-year-old, a native of Awka North in Anambra State, reportedly died shortly after being taken into custody by law enforcement authorities in Switzerland.

It was reported that despite Kelechi repeatedly shouting, “You’re hurting me,” the officer continued to forcefully restrain him.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday night and ended with Kelechi collapsing and dying less than an hour later at a police station.

An X user, @ChuksEricE, who uploaded the footage, alleged that Kelechi died following the encounter.

Another user, Somto Okonkwo, described him as a “hardworking Igbo man” and claimed he was “crying out for help while the officer pressed down on his neck.”

He further revealed that Kelechi left behind three young children in Nigeria.

According to reports, Kelechi collapsed and died at the police station less than an hour after his arrest.

Swiss authorities, in a statement reported by AFP, claimed that the incident occurred during a routine police check related to suspected drug activity.

They alleged that Kelechi attempted to flee but was later apprehended.

Swiss authorities also claimed that Kelechi became unwell during questioning and died despite emergency resuscitation efforts.

“After the situation calmed down, the man was taken to the police station for questioning,”
officials were quoted as saying.

“During the intervention, he became unwell and died shortly before 10:00 p.m., despite efforts by emergency medical services to revive him.”

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Vaud region has launched a criminal investigation into the case.

While autopsy and forensic examinations are currently underway, with crime scene investigators and medical experts involved.

Speaking on the incident, NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, condemned the incident and expressed the commission’s resolve to uncover the truth.

“This is not something we are going to condone. Irrespective of whatever the person may have done, he should have been given fair treatment,”
Balogun told PUNCH.

He added, “If we are able to gather all the necessary information surrounding his de@th, we will issue an official statement.

“Also, if the family can reach out to us or send a formal petition, we will be in a better position to know what happened.”

NIDCOM assured the Nigerian public that it is actively engaging relevant authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding Kelechi’s de@th.
