The Kwara State Police Command has apprehended a 17-year-old boy identified as Malik for allegedly fatally stabbing his father’s mistress, Mrs. Falilat Yusuf, in the Gaa Akanbi area of Ilorin.

The tragic incident occurred around 2 PM on Friday, June 13, 2025, in Danialu, causing panic among residents.

The victim, known in the community as Iya Ganiyat, was reportedly st@bbed multiple times in the neck before being left in a pool of blood inside her home.

SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, June 17, while speaking to Daily Trust.

She noted that the swift intervention of police officers prevented the suspect from being lynched by angry residents who caught him attempting to escape.

“The suspect is currently in our custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” she stated.

According to multiple witnesses, Malik had been living in a separate apartment and was reportedly banned from visiting the compound due to allegations of theft and previous altercations with the deceased. Teslim, the victim’s son who discovered his mother’s lifeless body, provided a chilling account of how the attack unfolded.

“I saw Malik near our house making strange hand signs. When I confronted him , he ran off. But when I stepped inside, I saw my mother lying dead in blood. It was shocking,” he said.

He added that the suspect later returned to the scene after changing his clothes, but he still had bloodstains on his shoes. This prompted a swift reaction from neighbours, who restrained him and handed him over to the police.

Community members at the scene reported that the suspect made confessional statements, admitting he had conflicts with the deceased, although the specifics of the dispute remain unclear.

The late Mrs. Falilat Yusuf was buried in Ilorin over the weekend, in accordance with Islamic rites. Her passing drew an outpouring of grief from relatives, friends, and neighbours, who described her as peaceful and hardworking.
