A devastating situation is unfolding in Niger State as heavy rainfall has swept through Mokwa town, the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area.

According to Daily Post, Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi confirmed that 15 bodies have been found so far, as efforts intensify to find more bodies or hopefully find some alive.

He said: “The people woke up to a heavy rain and the water went into homes, washing away the houses, properties and  some people. Right now as I speak with you, we have confirmed some deaths. 15 bodies have been recovered as authorities search for more.”

Muregi added that the heavy downpour accompanied by heavy storm hit from around Mashegu, leaving many in pain.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the incident, adding that it is still gathering details about the extent of the disaster.

The agency’s Director of Information and Special Duties, Dr. Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, has promised to make the findings known in due course.

As recue workers rescue several bodies from the water, many others remain unaccounted for, especially in areas where houses were completely submerged, leaving people in shock.
